I'm having the same problem. LG model BH14NS40 optical (14x BR burner) arrived from OWC in their enclosure today. It will not work on any USB port on the Retina iMac nor from either Thunderbolt 2 port with a TB-to-FW800 adapter and cable, and when I use the latter as soon as the tray comes all the way out it immediately retracts and goes back into the drive.
I have a similar issue, mine is with audio cd and external burner.
Dr dre let me ride download. Last week while i am still running Maverick, I was getting 16X burn speed for Audio CD in itune using external USB 2.0 burner.
2 days ago, I upgraded from to El Capitan, using the same batch of blank, burner, I am getting only 4X burn speed.
In console log, disc recording is asking to burn at 4X instead of 16X in Maverick. I tried to force it to burn at higher speed but the audio CD came out as corrupted.
Both itune and Burn get me the same result.
